All, just a heads up. Ordered a few of the below to test, works great. Can’t beat the price, cheapest I’ve found. Only one outlet is controlled by Zwave, but all I need. Wiring was very simple. Just need to get a different face plate and I all…[Read more]

    • Looks like a great deal, thanks! Couple issues though: Many of my outlets are GFCI (which these are not); and most of the outlets I wish to control are used for lighting (lamps, track lights, …); and thus I want DIMMING capability.

I sure miss the cheap X10 outlet ”lamp” adaptors and wall switches that both included dimming. :-/

I want to use SmartThings where I do not have Internet router. What I want to do is use a smartphone (family plan share data) to get Internet which is much cheaper than $50 per month for Internet. Is there anyway I can have the hub communicate with the phone for access to the cloud?

    • HeyKen,
You probably need a wifi to ethernet bridge. Naturally the hub will only communicate when your phone is present and sharing a connection.

One way to accomplish this is to share your wifi connection via your computer. I’ve done this successfully with the hub.

Although I’ve not tried this particular option, there are dedicated…[Read more]

I want to detect my garage door being open by using the multi-sensor WITHOUT the magnetic stripe (as shown in one of the how-to videos). How do I make the multi-sensor do that? In the YouTube video comments it says something about having to access the ’web interface’ — anybody know how to do that?

    • I was curious about this too.

      • I got in touch with support, and they set this up for me. As explained to me, you should be able to do this
yourself by installing the multi-sensor on the door, then going into your devices (at ide.smartthings.com) and
editing the device, setting its type to ‘SmartSense Virtual Open/Closed’. You need to set up any apps using the
        device first,…[Read more]

        • the IDE website is for developers only? tried getting in there but didnt have access. I contacted support and they helped sit up for me. I also installed a relay to open my garage doors as well..works great!

Hey is there any way to add a second user ro an account yet?

    • I spoke tro SmarthThings support and they said this feature is not yet available, but it is high on their list of devlopment. They said they hope to have this functionality available in the next ”few weeks”… hopefully sooner than later.

Can you control your hub from two phones (wife and mine)?

Does anyone know of a _wired_ contact sensor? Wireless is simple and fun to play with, but in some places power is available; no need to mess with batteris. I’m not having much luck finding anything.

    • What are you going to attach the wires to? The Smart Hub only speaks wireless.
If this is a popular requirement, though, then this is a good Project opportunity: A “wired things interface”. Perhaps the “last mile” (or last few feet really…) could be wireless to the Smart Hub; or could be connected to the LAN and/or Smart Cloud via…[Read more]

      • I should be more clear! When I said wired, I meant power. I’d like contacts that can either be wall warted or perhaps a central low voltage hub. Basically your typical alarms system tech. A module that allows a consumer to use existing contact wiring + ZigBee interface would be a handy integration point.

        • Oh!… That’s a big difference … I should have actually read your post. :-)

How do traditional / legacy home security systems handle this? I presume if they use wiring for “data” then they are also wired for power.

One of the risks of using the home electrical supply is that a thief could cut power to the entire household before breaking…[Read more]

          • Yeah, traditional alarms use wall power, but they always have a battery too. I too have my intarwebs and essentials on battery backup. All of the contacts are two wire runs. I’m not certain, but I believe there is a constant voltage on the lines and it changes when the contacts are triggered. This allows the main unit to detect if those wires are…[Read more]

            • That sounds like a solution architecture to explore then: i.e., hacking the “main unit” to see what signal levels are available that could be translated to Thing events. In other words, use your legacy alarm system’s sensors at the end points, and just interface the Alarm Main Unit either via surrogate sensors, or a master sensor, or an…[Read more]

              • Yup. I’ll be exploring a pass-through or vampiric main unit as I want to keep the existing alarm functional. If I get anywhere with it I’ll definitely post the details.

Anybody know how to change this build site’s color scheme or blog template? I am visually impaired, and I have trouble reading the light blue and light gray on white background.

I wish I had gone with the developer kit. Any timing on when we can buy the Shield?

    • Maybe I should ”auction” mine off… I am very curious to use it, but, frankly, it may be awhile before I can dedicate some time to tinkering… I might regret offering to sell it though, if they become hard to find… :-)

If I need to post this somewhere else for support or to report a bug, please advise.
I coded my first smartapp, and it works well. However, I am finding issues with the SmartThings scheduler. For example, I’m calling the runIn() method, which calls my custom method “delayedMethod” after waiting a specified number of seconds. In reviewing the…[Read more]

    • Just to clarify, by sporadically, I mean, sometimes the method runs after the specified number of seconds. Other times it never runs at all.

      • There is currently a problem where the “runIn()” method does not properly clean up after itself, and therefore fails to call your handler after the first execution. If you uninstall/reinstall the app it works again — the first time, which is probably why it seems sporadic.

There is a workaround that you can use until we can fix the underlying…[Read more]

        • Thanks for the detailed explanation, and the behavior you explained with the app only running the first time (unless I performed an app uninstall/reinstall) is exactly was exactly what I was experiencing. I’ll try your workaround when I get a chance. If I don’t reply back, assume that the workaround solved my immediate need. I look forward to…[Read more]

Created my first smartapp last night. When the door unlocks after a users arrives it will re-lock it after 5 min :) Works like a charm

    • Nice. Was going to try to do this after lockitron comes out for everyone. Are you using mobile presence or the little proximity dongle?

      • Well since I am a android users right now i’m using the presence sensor as I don’t have a app for my android. I have a old iphone that i am using to set things up and do some testing. The IDE is much better for looking into things. Wished they provided some more debugging of the zwave and zigbee stuff though.

  • I hope to be your distributor in Egypt
    Is this available now

Looking for a clarification on a product compatibility…The product list shows a specific model Z-wave kwikset deadbolt which is a different style than I just purchased. I live in an area that we have to haul water to a cistern. I have an arduino and maxsonar sensor that I can measure the water depth in a very crude sketch right now. Nothing is permanently mounted but I am looking for a way to set it up so my wife does not have to manually measure water. Would be cool to integrate it as a smart app for her. …[Read more]

Question for you guys: I got a Aeon Labs Aeotec DSB05106-ZWUS Z-Wave Multisensor and put one in my back yard and another in my front yard. Basically wanted to sense motion and activate a light or the SmartThings siren/strobe light. I setup one of the smart apps to on a light. It sensed motion but my light was just flickering on and off, doesnt…[Read more]

In Australia we have a national grid which show how much load, green energy and the price updated every 5 mins. See http://gridfilter.openenergy.com.au/jqm/

We’ve been getting lots of questions about support for additional standards here at SmartThings, including standards like WiFi, UPnP, Bonjour, and MQTT, so I wanted to take a minute and give everyone some perspective on these things.

There are a variety of initiates across the industry to create ad-hoc standards in support of the Internet of…[Read more]
